The technique is used to separate different components in a mixture by dissolving one substance, called the mobile phase, into another substance, called the stationary phase.

Materials Required for Chromatography science experiment
- Tablecloth for protecting the table surface
- Small syringes or cups filled with water
- Coffee filters. Take white coloured filters. You can also use chromatography filters that are specially made for such science experiments for kids.
- Secondary and tertiary coloured markers. Ensure that these are watercolour markers or water-based sketch pens.
- Green-coloured pipe cleaners. You can alternately use twigs or small-sized sticks.
- Clear tape
Steps to Follow for performing Chromatography science experiment
First, you need to crush and level out the coffee filters.
Draw a circle on the filters using one colour. Make the circle bold and thick. You need to use secondary colours like black, green, red, orange, pink, yellow, purple, and brown. You can make half-circles with one colour, and the other half-circle with another colour.
Next, you need to fold the filter in half, and then another half to form a cone.
Use small, short glasses and fill them with drops of water. Now, open the cone top and let the tip of the cone into the water. Ensure that only the end dips into the water, and not the circled part. Alternatively you can add water drops to each of the coffee filter papers using a syringe. As the liquid spreads, kids will be delighted to observe the colour molecules’ separation as the water molecules spread across the filter.
If you want the water to spread further, add one or two drops of water to the filter. The further the water spreads, the colour will also spread further, making it all look attractive. When the water reaches the edge of the filter, you can take the filters out.
Now wait for the water to dry.
Once the coffee filters are completely dry, you can use the filters for making chromatography flowers at home. The kids will be amazed at the vast expanse of colours that have separated and dried on the coffee filters. Cut the filters across the edges.
Take some of the filter papers together and bundle them up to give them the shape of a flower. Ensure that you twist the bottom in a funnel shape so that the ends can be easily attached to the green-coloured pipe cleaners, and use the clear tape to fix the filter papers.
