Teach Kids Science Through Cabbage Juice Experiment
Science experiments can be fun, especially when teaching your kids about new science concepts and principles. Cabbage might not be a preference when it comes to kids eating vegetables, but it will surely be when you use it for a cabbage juice experiment for kids.
Cabbage juice experiment for kids is simple, fun, and easy to perform activities with kids. So let’s get started with our first experiment!
CABBAGE JUICE EXPERIMENT 1
The cabbage dye experiment will show you how plants absorb water through leaves. This experiment will also teach your kids how important it is to have clean water surrounding our food and us.
Things we need
- Three big leaves of cabbage
- 3 Clean Glasses
- Food dyes or watercolour paint
- Pick any three of your favourite watercolors like red, green, blue, yellow, purple, etc., mix them into the water and add in separate glasses or glass jars.
- Immerse the cabbage leaves in the coloured water and observe how they change their colors slowly.
- The color change might not be quite apparent for the first day, but the leaves will start getting color from the second day. Slowly, they will get completely coloured, and you will see the tint of the colors you have used on the edges and veins of the cabbage leaves.
Note: While performing this cabbage juice experiment for kids, pick dark colours so that the transfer of the colours from water to leaves is visible.
How Did The Cabbage Experiment Work?
The experiment shows how plants absorb water through leaves. You can keep the leaves in their respective glasses for many days, and the coloured water will slowly get discoloured as the water moves up from the leaves via its stem. From this cabbage juice experiment for kids, they will learn that leaves absorb water as it is, and therefore, it is essential to have clean where we grow our fruits and vegetables.
CABBAGE JUICE EXPERIMENT 2
The red cabbage juice indicator that will teach your kids how to check the alkalinity or acidity of liquids.
Things we need
- A red cabbage
- A mixer or blender
- A stainer
- Plenty of water and some container
- Start by adding 3 to 4 cups of water in a blender. Peel a couple of leaves of red cabbage and add it to the blender. Close its lid tightly and blend the cabbage leaves nicely until it becomes smooth.
- You need to strain the messy portion out as we need only the liquid part for our experiment. Remove the liquid in a considerable container and use it as required.
- Now remove some of the liquid in several containers and add some ingredients to them one by one to check if they are acidic or basic. For example, you can add baking soda, vinegar, turmeric, or any other substance you would like to experiment with.
- If you add an acidic substance like vinegar, the liquid will turn red when you add an alkaline or base into the liquid, and it will turn green. If the substance is neutral, the liquid will not change its colour or will discolour slightly.
This is a cool cabbage experiment for kids, but the liquids will release an unpleasant odour when the reaction happens.
How Did The Red Cabbage Juice Experiment Work?
This experiment tells us how to make a red cabbage indicator as the red cabbage juice acts as an indicator to tell us whether a substance has acidic or alkaline properties. Water has a pH level of 7 that is considered to be neutral. However, when you mix cabbage juice, a pigment known as anthocyanin modifies the solution’s colour when exposed to acidic or basic substances.
For example, when you put some lemon juice into the cabbage water, it will turn reddish due to the citric acid. Similarly, when you mix baking soda, the solution will turn bluish as it has sodium in it, which is a base. Therefore, you can say that the cabbage juice indicator colors change depending upon the chemical composition.
