4 Interesting DIY Projects to Try at Home

These 4 creative activities will help your child’s DIY abilities whilst equipping them with some invaluable practical skills they will use for the rest of their lives.

Bracelet Charms

Things you’ll need:

  • clean transparent plastic packaging, e.g. takeout boxes
  • scissors
  • hole puncher
  • colored permanent markers

How To Make DIY Bracelet Charms:

1. Before working with the plastic packaging you should clean it thoroughly. Then you can cut out a large, flat piece, e.g. the bottom of the takeout box.

2. Find some nice designs or cute images that you would like to use for this DIY project. These can be found online and printed out. Keep in mind that the images will shrink by up to 70% in the oven, so make sure they are large enough. Now lay the images under the plastic and copy them using the colored markers. It’s best to use a black marker and start with the outline.

3. The next step is to color in your image and punch a hole at the top. This hole will be used to attach the charm to a bracelet or to make a necklace. Now cut out the image making sure not to cut off the hole.

4. Place the plastic on a baking sheet and bake it for two to three minutes at 330 °F. You’ll notice that the plastic begins to curl and crumple but don’t worry, this is completely normal. When it is finished baking it will be flat again.

5. Now the plastic is smaller and thicker which makes it more stable. You can use metal jump rings to attach the charms to a piece of jewelry.

Homemade Playdough

Things you’ll need:

  • 4 cups flour
  • 2 tbsp oil
  • 1 cup warm water
  • food coloring (4 different colors)
  • 1½ cups salt
  • 5 bowls

How to Make Homemade Playdough:

First pour a quarter of the cup of water into four of the bowls. Next, add a few drops of food coloring into each bowl. Now add half a tablespoon of oil into each of the bowls. Take the fifth bowl, add the flour and salt, and mix everything together using a tablespoon. Next add a cup of the salty flour mix into each of the prepared bowls. Mix the food coloring with the salty flour until the color of the mixture is even.

Sprinkle some flour onto a worktop and knead the mixture into a ball as you would with normal dough. Now place each ball of dough into a resealable plastic bag. Try to remove as much air from the bags as you can. Place the sealed bags in the fridge for a short time. The modeling clay is now finished. Let’s go play!

Photo Fridge Magnets

Things you’ll need:

  • baby food container
  • portrait photos of your children
  • cardboard

  • small adhesive magnets

How to Make DIY Project with Photo Fridge Magnets:

First place the lid of the baby food container onto a photo you’d later like to see on your fridge. Use a pen to draw around the lid and cut the image out. Cut out a circle of cardboard that’s the same size as the image. Now place a dab of hot glue on the cardboard and stick the image to it. Now dab some glue onto the underside of the lid and stick the cardboard image onto it.

To finish, glue a magnet to the top of the lid and place it onto your fridge. That’s it! Your fridge magnet DIY project is ready to use!

How to Make Bottle Print DIY Project:

First mix the pink acrylic paint with some water. Place the bottom of the bottle on top of it and stamp it onto the canvas. Try to make your prints to the side or upper part of the canvas so that you have enough space for the next step. Wait for the paint to dry. Use the black paint to draw a tree onto the canvas. Its branches should reach up to the pink “flowers.” Wait until the paint is dry again. You can also print other flowers onto the canvas. And voilà, your Japanese cherry blossom picture is finished!
